Hi,

What Cichlids have you kept and then you have seen two completely different species become good friends?. My friends male Dempsey is kept in a Malawi set up and it has developed a strange friendship with a Red Empress male. The dempsey is about 10 inch and the Empress is about 6 - 7. They both tolerate each other so well, the Dempsey is never aggressive to him but is always aggressive to the others. My friend said that the Empress has always been picked on and the Dempsey is very peaceful and he thinks he is protecting the Empress. They never seemed to get into a fight at food time either. I was amazed by it all, they followed each other around and the Dempsey protects him when other malawis are chasing him. They are both definately males.

So basically post any other similar stories of two types of cichlids getting along really well (no breeding pairs).

Thanks

Firemouth & Acei cichlid: Firemouth tolerates no other fish including bigger GT, oscar and a brisiliensis.

Jack Dempsey Pair that allows a severum on their side of the tank and even in the cave sometimes (all others shall die!)

In my youthful and less experienced days, I kept a Pacu and a Texas Cichlid together (long time ago, don't flame, guys). The Pacu and the Tex were inseparable. The Pacu would gather the food or feeders in a corner and he and the Tex would gorge themselves. They never fought one another and were very protective of each other. Weird pairing, but very enjoyable to watch swimming together.

a blood red parrot and a kissing gourami...weird, I know

It is really weird that these combos seem to work. There is obviously some underlying reason why they choose to do that. Like my example of the Empress and the JD, the JD must only like the peaceful ones.
