Strange Cichlid buddy combos?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have an 18" RTC and a 7-8" Lima that are inseperable. The Lima stays near the RTC in her headstand, and has ever since the RTC was 3" long. Over the last year he's quickly outgrown her, but they sleep together every night. He's severely deformed in his face which I think contributes to his very unusual behavior, which is very peaceful. He's never, ever gone after another fish, and since before we had him, there have been BN plecos and a 2.5" clown pleco that he's never messed with. I find it really interesting the relationships animals can form especially ones that are not "supposed" to happen. :)

An oscar and a 3 spot (golden) gourami.

My 450 is an Amazon tank with a nicely stocked assortment of Amazon fish... and that foolish gourami as she and the oscar are best buddies. She follows him around constantly and he's cool with that. Oscar is at least a foot long- he could eat her in a heart beat, but here we are 3-4 years later and they are still hanging out together.

I had a synspilum and a chocolate for awhile that were best friends. I got them both at about 2" and grew them out to about 7", but then had to give them up when I moved. Really wish I could get a pair like that again someday.

wow i also have a JD and Red Empress in the same tank (with other fish) and those 2 are the only to that never fight i always thought it was weird

Hi,

What Cichlids have you kept and then you have seen two completely different species become good friends?. My friends male Dempsey is kept in a Malawi set up and it has developed a strange friendship with a Red Empress male. The dempsey is about 10 inch and the Empress is about 6 - 7. They both tolerate each other so well, the Dempsey is never aggressive to him but is always aggressive to the others. My friend said that the Empress has always been picked on and the Dempsey is very peaceful and he thinks he is protecting the Empress. They never seemed to get into a fight at food time either. I was amazed by it all, they followed each other around and the Dempsey protects him when other malawis are chasing him. They are both definately males.

So basically post any other similar stories of two types of cichlids getting along really well (no breeding pairs).

Thanks

My 9" Oscar with two female opaline gouramis, one 3" one 2"

When I first introduced the oscar to the tank at ~3", all the other inhabitants were picking on him and forced him into the corner, but then the larger of the two gouramis came next to him and they made eye contact, the gourami made his colors dark and protected him until the oscar grew some balls and kicked the **** out and or ate the rest of the fish in the tank (including a 5 inch common goldy, 3 3-4" gold barbs (one of which he bit in half and left to rot), and a 6" gt)
And today, he lets them do whatever they want in his tank, they even "clean" him sometimes, which i find really weird. He just stays in one place while they pick at who knows what on his skin and anus.
Whenever they get in the way of his food he just looks at them and waits for them to move so he can eat. They're bite size for him, but he loves them.

looks like we've got something in common :D

For now, the weirdest friendship I've got in my tank is my 7" EBJD and my 4-5" Jag. They hang out together a lot, they have gotten into a scuffle lately, but I think that's because my EBJD wants to spawn and the Jag was messing with his mate.

i have a jag and oscar together... their fine and i have a oscar with a brown knife fish in a different tank they are fine
