Strange Fish Appeared In My Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fins are perciformes patterned. Darter. (That is, having a first and second separate dorsal fin)

they seem harmless. just ugly. are they harmless?. there in a discus tank and i cant catch for the life of me

They are harmless, but if your discus breed, they may eat eggs or fry. Also, the higher temperatures that Discus enjoy will eventually make the darters suffer long-term.

My best advice would be to make a minnow trap out of a 2-liter bottle, trap them with some bloodworms or shrimp pellets, and sell/trade them to a North American Natives freak like me. Grr distance.... Darters are the only thing I can't catch/trap in CT.

That is, they are there, I just can't catch or trap them. Too damn smart.

yup its a darter. They are fast as hell but basically harmless.

you like these things?? there are 50 in the ghost shrimp tank that they sell with the shrimp for the same price. 20 cents.

North American darters are some of the most colorful and diverse families of fish on Earth, period. Many of the southern varieties are speckled with orange, yellow, black, and red colorations rivalling that of the most expensive tropical species.

There's no way I can get to IA, but yes, many of us are interested in these guys.

I love natives, and I'm really, really tired of waiting for my eastern mosquitofish to finally drop fry.
