My first impression was the same as Oddball.
Here in Panama true snook (not the cichlid snook) (the Calva) are at times found far up river in fresh water rapids in the Rio Chagras, in Costa Rica in the Rio Colorado, in Tortuguero, in Nicaragua in Lake Nicaragua, and in Veracruz Mexico.
On the Altlantic side they are found from Florida to Brazil.
There is also a small snook Centropomis robalito found mostly in estuaries as far up stream as 50 meters from the gulf of California to Peru.
All the above have the double dorsal split, a forked tail, and protruding lower jaw.
The lateral line is distinct, and all have large eyes.
