So I use water conditioner and bacteria supplement every time I do water changes (50% per week) and feed my fish a diet of bloodworms and cichlid pellets (feed 3-4 times a day) but it seems that they have lost some of their color. Right now they are about 1.5 inches. I was going to start adding stress coat to help protect their natural slime coat.

If anybody has any experience using this product or similar products I would be interested in hearing your opinions and advice.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I suggest not to use stress coat "YET"...your reds only 1.5" it really small. you don't know for sure your red are stress out.

Piranha are known color changing very often. Color change can cause by any of the following

gravel
light
diet
enviroment
water quality
mood
breeding sign
stress
sick
injury..

all these can cause color changing, like i've said you don't know exactly happen to them. I would add aquarium salt. salt won't hurt them by can reduce stress, and injury (although your red not injury)

nope no injury. and i do add a pinch of aquarium salt when i do water changes.

In which way are they losing their colour? Could be a number of things. Have you moved decor for example. When stressed Reds tend to go darker. 50% water change is quite a lot in one go, why don't you break it down into two or three changes a week?
They will change colour as they grow anyway, as will no doubt know.

They don't look as vibrant. I do 2 separate 25% changes about three days apart (50% total per week). They seem to be acting fine and aren't skittish when somebody enters the room.

What size tank are they in? And how nasty is your water getting, that 50% needs to be changed?

Those little guys don't have a lot of color yet to begin with, so it won't take much to make them change color.

My suggestion would be: Take out less water say 10%, if you're removing so much water trying to vacuum, then take your siphon, and put the hose in the filter intake tube. This will clean your gravel without removing so much water.

Stop adding bacteria. Your colony will get to big and die off, and this will cause stress to your ps.

Try feeding small fish filets, or baby shrimp.

i use it and its good but its mostly used to dechlorinate the water

like monkey brain said during different times of day (withous changing anything else) their coulour could vary

could also try some colour enhanching pelets or shrimp

MoNkEy~BrAiN what is your experience with stress coat?

I'm not monkey brain, but here's my opinion anyway.

Stress coat = garbage.
Save your money. Oxiginate water and no need to worry much about chlorine.

Don't even have a test kit. Stop being marketed to.
