You know its funny you said that. My wife pointed that out to me too. Black cons do grow faster then white/pinks. My male gained about .5" in girth and total length but the female has barely growen any at all. They both get the same diet plus they have been getting alot of fatty foods and cold water changes.
 
Thats true they do grow faster until they reach the 5inch mark then the pink gene grows quicker, especially in male pink convicts. I never owned a pink convict male that didnt reach 6inches but i did have black convict males that stop growing at 5.5inches for some odd reason.

Its not really cold. How your thinking its really just a few degrees colder then the tank temp. Its supposed to simulate the rain season when most central and south American fish have their young. You can go either way about 3° up or down usually does the trick. Doing this and feeding fatty foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms helps provoke spawning .
 
it really doesnt matter . i usually crank up the heater 5 degrees wait a day or two then do a wc with a little colder water.
