I recently got a good deal i cant refuse on a new tank i was planning on using to keep my polies in, but the damn thing has a blue background. Im in between black or reddish sand from 3m. Anyone have any blue backed tanks that could chime in? Or anyone in general have any opnions? I really want the fish to get the chance to bring their colors out, but I am afraid the blue background might recess that ability.

SURPRISE US''V''

I like the look of polypterus with white sand. Rallysman has that, it looks great!

On certain species it looks good wurm but for these dark bold banded endlies it gets washed out, I have whiteish sand in their quarantine tank just so they had a little substrate in there, and it looks terrible.

agreed, I had to throw in a bunch of black stones in my endli tank cause they came in looking great and now look like crap. It's starting to get better

I'm worried the same will happen to my big ornate, I'd love to put white sand in my 160g but I think I'll have to go for a mix of dark grey and dark red (sounds funny but I've been experimenting and it looks good!). I might switch the 80g he's in now over to white just to see how much of a negative effect it has on his colour.

I agree w/ what you said earlier, that is if you keep the blue background, go w/ black sand and if you make the background black, go w/ the red. I have had white-ish sand in a few tanks and hated it in every one, so I switched to black t-grade. I also had gray sand w/ a black background before and it looked good.

Here's a couple pix of my tank w/ black background and red s-grade if you haven't seen them already. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128187
