Stung by ray

Just to touch on some of the questions posted in this thread....

Getting tagged a second time can be WORSE than the first. The idea of the sting being less and less each time is incorrect.

This injury looks like what I'll call a 'dry' tag. If the barb of the ray has been damaged or stripped (just the bare barb, with no sheath), the toxin is much less - if any at all. This looks like a straight puncture from the barb with no real reaction from the introduction of the toxin they carry.

Hot water is the right course of action. the toxin's venom is based on a complex protein which will breakdown when taken over it's temp range. The hotter the better, and go as long as you can. 30 - 45 - 60 minutes even. The longer you leave it in hot water, the more you break down the toxin.

It is a MUST to have the wound cleaned by a medical professional. If there are barb fragments in the cut, you won't know until it's too late. I've been surprised when cleaning out some of mine at what is found even after we thought it was flushed very clean. No point in risking losing a hand/foot/other part that gets stung.

Hi,

when i try to transfer a ray yesterday, accidentally got stung when packing them into plastic beg. about near 1" stung into my hand, the sting action is like scorpion sting, the ray that stung me is about 30cm. although i press out the blood immediate and also dip my hand into hot water, still suffer extreme pain for about 3 hours. but pain did not spread to upper hand like other people describe. only pain around the place got stung. anyway.... was happy after 3 hours when looking them swimming in my tank. they are innocent. hehe.......

some reference of what i do after get stung :

1. press the hand immediate to prevent blood flow to other part of body.
2. try to squeeze out the blood as much as possible
3. use a cloth to tie up the elbow part, to prevent blood circulation to other part of body.
4. dip the part got stung into hot water for 20 minutes, as hot as you can stand. ;-)
5. after this, untie the cloth.

th pain will last 2-3 hours after this.

hope this story help. the photo of my hand that got stung. ;-)
