I dont think i would find much comfort in my doctor "looking up" treatments online...I'm sure there are peer reviewed medical documents on how to treat this type of thing...anyway, too bad theres no pics, I would love to see the damage :)

Why bc of the pictures??? Plenty of people on here own rays & Ive heard of a few getting stung but nothing ever too serious, at least that I have seen on here. The pictures I posted are from wounds that happened in the wild. I was just curious to know what a stingray wound looked like so I googled it and figured some others might be interested to see. Don't be discouraged bc of the pics, (although those wound do look painful) they are still beautiful and amazing creatures and if I had a big enough I'd take my chances.

If you get stung by a ray on the hand or finger, and you go to the hospital, you tell the doctor to put in what's called a "nerve block". This is an injection of anesthetic, usually lidocaine, into the nerve that supplies the area that has been stung. This will give immediate relief, and lasts about 2-4 hours. It is the only treatment. I have done it. You cannot do this on the arm, as there is no readily accessible nerve that can be blocked.

Honestly, Steve Irwin should have known better. The type of ray that got Steve doesn't even have the capacity to strike up with its tail. The bull ray can only swing its tail side to side, mostly to fend off nurse sharks and the like that usually come at it from behind. Steve got too close and impaled himself on the barb, and basically the only thing that the stingray did wrong was show up. Steve impaled himself, and what is worse, he pulled it out.

He might have had a chance had he gone into shock and left the barb in; he yanked it out, making that big (and clearly avoidable) mistake #2.

I loved Steve Irwin; I grew up watching his show, and when I have kids they too will grow up watching his show. Again, I love the guy. But making fun of stupid decisions, even fatal ones, is an important element to our humor and an essential piece of our culture. Ever read the Darwin Awards? :)

just thought i would post some pics of my sister hand she was stung by my female ray while trying to hand feed her pic 1 is a couple hours after #2 is 35 days pic 3 is 20 days and pic 4 is with the barb at 9 weeks
