great thread!!! Very entertaining to read. I've never worked in a LFS before so no great stories, But had to say....great thread.

working today, i noticed a guy looking at a 5 inch oscar, so i asked him if he needed any help or had any questions, and he looks at me as serious as a person can be and asks if he could keep the oscar in one of those 5 gallon buckets we sell for water changes.

:screwy:
:WTF:

People keep telling me "I need one of those algae eaters." They mean Plecostomus. I tell them that Plecs can't live on algae alone, and don't eat much algae anyway. They look at me like I'm crazy. They also scoff when I tell them their walmart filter is worthless when you pull the cartridge out for a new one.

LOL good stories I think I am working at a LFS soon. Great I will have stories about people.

Well I do have two.

One time I was in HOT (in MD) and I was checking out the fish and some kid(looks about 6 or 7yrs old) comes up to me and asks me to get a fish for him. I wasn't even wearing the same color shirt as the rest of the staff.

The other was I was in a fish store and some guy is walking up and i overheard a conversation and he asked for that Silver fish right there(Silver Arowana). So I asked what size tank he had he said a 10 gallon. I asked if he was going to upgrade in about 4months. He said "No he can live in there for life." So I walked by the staff member and told him not to get the fish for him and tell him to get him a tetra of some sort. So he did and the guy was happy.

A female customer comes in, browses for a bit and settles on the SW aisle. She decides she wants the brown tang, but needs a little clarification about the price. "This brown tang is $30?" "Yes mam - what size tank do you have?" "This whole brown tang is $30?" "Yes mam, but do you already have an established SW tank?" "You mean I get all the fish and stuff for $30?" It took me a minute to process that she meant TANK and evidently couldn't read the tag BROWN TANG $30 with any understanding.

Sadly, working in a city where a large % of the population is functionally illiterate makes events like this somewhat commonplace.

:lol3:

The whole brown tang for $30! WTH!

Ahaha. This is some good stuff! I'm sure you guys deal with the same type of people that I do in the tackle shop. Sometimes people are just plain stupid!!

Keep the stories comming, this is good reading

I know what you mean about so many customers being aliterate (know how to read, but willingly choose not to do so). I am so tired of the "What is this?" when only tiger barbs are in the tank, and after answering, being asked "how much are they?" My new years resolution was to no longer support this habit. Now when they ask, I simply point to the sign on the tank. -Andrew
