When it comes to "large fish" they say the length of the tank should be twice the length of the fish's adult size and the width should be the same as the length of the fish's adult size. Wouldn't an 8" fish be fine in a 10g tank at that point? Just curious on what the expanation would be.

Id have to disagree with that. Id say that the tank should be at the very least 3x the length of the fish and at least 1.5x as wide as the fish. Unless it is somethng like an eel.

i go three times as long as the fish and width is right and i would say use your own judgement on the subject if the fish doesnt have enough room to move freely than dont keep them in that small of a tank. I only use 10's for hospital tanks but what sucks now is that smoe of my fish need alot bigger hospital tank i am thinking of turning my extra 55 into the permanent hospital

who is this THEY ... just wondering if THEY = the one selling u the fish so they can feed their own belly

You should buy the largest tank you can regardless of size, if you are close to any "guidelines" it's too small.

Guidelines that I've heard.

Also, how do you guys feel about the 1g/1" of fish rule? Of course, I know "they" are also refering to small fish. But how do you feel about that rule?

a large fish in a small tank just wont do

that water volume is much to small for a fish of that size.

water paremeter would have major fluctuations, major enough to cause shock or poisoning by there own waste. also retarded growth of the fish
