Stupid Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Any tank that you think the fish can move around in comfortably at adult size. My 12 inch oscar does fine in his 55 gal. tank

I dont think that those "rules" were ever meant to be the strict and gospel truth for novice's that they have become, it's obvious that 1 inch per gallon just doesnt work, but remember this probably started as a very simple basic guideline for people who had absolutely no idea on how to keep fish and for clueless petshop employees to give out as advice to those same people who were probably only going to be buying a few neons anyway???? Fish need certain dimensions over just gallon amount, but the larger volume of water helps give fish the more stable enviroment they need to thrive. ( can you say run-on ? lol)

to awnser your question, no way! I would only use a 10 gallon as a fry tank, small fish hosptal tank, feeder tank or livebearer breeder.

10G=a pair of dwarf puffers, a malaysian leaf fish, a wasp fish, or even a dozen Burmese spineless eels (be cool with a few zebra danios, they are only 2 1/2"-3" long).
I am not saying a 10g should be used for anything more than 4" long (except maybe an 8" worm eel) but they can hold some great mini-monsters, or just small oddballs. Here is a picture of the Burmese spineless eel, I wish I could find some. They are normally found in flooded grassy areas in water only a couple inches deep or even roadside puddles. I think that even a 2 gallon bowl would be cool with a few of these :grinyes:

I think it varies by person. I have 5 fish in my 115,the largest is my Acara and its only 5". I might add a couple more but I want my fish to be comfy. I see some people on here and it seems they will cram as much in a tank as they can. So like I said, to each his own.
