Stupid Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thats just great....I was planning on putting a couple Arapaimas in a betta bowl

Yeah theres no hard fast rules to fishkeeping, just use your best judgement. If you have doubts you probably have good reason for them.

None of the rules make any sense,1 inch per gallon works for small slim bodied fish but even thats kind of tight.as for bigger fishes it should be able to turn around without rubbing its face on the glass at least.Im for very understocked tanks

I've always believe in give my guys good space, but I just thought about that guideline the other day. I thought, "If that rule was true...I could put a 6" to 8" fish in a 10g tank!" I would never do such a think, but it was a question that popped in my head and I was curious about other peoples' opinion on this "guideline."

1" per gallon rule is bull$h!t if i followed that rule its saying that i can keep my 19" silver in a 20 gallon tank yeah right
"They" forget the rest of that rule, it refers to minimum requirements and cubic inches, and rounds upwards on size and downwards on # of fish so if a neon tetra is 1 1/4" long and 1/4" wide and 3/8" deep you could keep 8 per gallon (about right for maximum stocking).
A 10" oscar is 10 x 3.5 x 1.5 = 52.5 gallon (again in the ballpark).
For a 19" aro I would guess 19 x 4 x 1.5 = 114 gallons at that size (not allowing for growth.
The foot print rule is a minimum of 1.5 x the length of the fish for width and 3-4 times the length of the fish for tank length so for the aro about 24"x60"x20"=124gallon. Again this does not allow for species requirements or growth.
Both rules should be adjusted for these factors and they should only taken as rough guides.
Suprisingly they both work pretty well for most species.
An eel 36" long requires a 54g tank according to the cubic inch rule.

I was curious so I ran the #s on a 36"pacu (36 x 24 x 3.5 = 3024g) so according to that rule you need a tank around 10'x10'x4' but by the othe way you need a tank 9-12'L x 4 1/2' W x 4 1/2' T or between 1350g and 1800g as a minimum, still works for me.

I would hate living in my freakin closet.. I couldn't even stand a one bedroom apartment!! And that would be like Puttin you in your closet for your whole life..

Do the math... I've done a little bit of time... 12x4x8=HELL... Just like a tank... They even brought me my food.. But I didn't care I WANTED OUT!!

POP of coarse....
