Stupid Stealth Heaters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got a couple of Stealths with a tank setup I bought on Craigslist and at first they didnt work, so I turned the dial all the way up and all they way down a couple times and then set it to the temp I wanted and it worked. Its worth a try.

That calculator helps me feel better about running just the one heater for so long.

To answer several questions, it gets sunlight for a few hours a day right where one heater is, but the sunlight doesn't heat it up much. I measure with a thermometer that makes the rounds through all my tanks and I trust to be accurate. And it's also cold to the touch relative to my two other tanks at 80+. Room Temp is 72 minus whatever leakage there is (3 exposed walls- this room is colder than the rest of the house). The water temp is consistent throughout the tank so it's not some case of poor circulation where both heaters think it's that warm.

I run 3w per gallon on all my tanks. seems to work fantastic, no matter what season it is..

I plugged in the info for my 150 (where I run 2 x 250w) and it spat out 200w.

which would probably work but it would likely be on 24/7 in the winter months (my basement gets a bit chilly in winter).

this would put a great deal of stress on the heater I would think.
they are probably not designed for continuous running.

they are meant to cycle on/off...

You need to plug in your basement winter temperature to get that figure.

I run about 1 watt per gallon on my 500 gallons of water and I see my controllers light "off" more than I do "on" during winter months when air temperature is 68 degrees and tank is 78 degrees.

Spend the money and buy a titanium heater...very reliable..they can be purchased up to 800watts! you can find them online for a fair price...its cheaper than buying several smaller heaters...much cleaner looking too. Just a suggestion :)

I just bought 2 250w stealth heaters for my 125, which had been heated by 1 Ebo 250w unit. I know they're working because there are bubbles on them both, but they're set at 82 and my water temperature is 74. The fish don't seem to mind but this annoys the heck out of me, as does the fact that they don't have an indicator light to let you know if they're on.

I thought these were supposed to be incredibly reliable within 1 degree. Should've gotten the Rena heaters.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Is it possible that they shut themselves off because a bit of it was no longer submerged? The tank seems to have had its usual level of evaporation (about an inch) and I had it so that the red knobs were above water level when I put them in. Could it be that the feature of shutting off when there's no water applies to even a tiny bit at the top of the heater? Because that seems like bad design.

should'ov gotten the jaguars, i had two them heat a small pool before

This highly depends on the room temp as well. What is everyones room temp? The cooler the room, the more wattage you need.

I don't know if you checked, but make sure the heaters are plugged in. Try one (and then the other) in a smaller tank to see if it works. If it doesn't heat a small body of water, you know there is a problem with the heater. Getting 2 bad stealth heaters is pretty bad luck. I have 6 stealths, and they all work fine.
