stupid Tannins

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have some bogwood in my 85 that is ten years old and it stilll has a littlle tea color to it. My L-114's and cardinals love it though so I justt not let it bother me anymore.

Purigen even removes tannins??? WHAT DOESN'T THIS STUFF DO??? You wouldn't happen to know what chemical(s) are in purigen that nullify tannins do you? that stuff is like the aquarist's crack, so long as you don't mini-cycle your tank :D

Yes it does, I put it in one night and the next morning the brown tint was almost completely gone. It will require a recharge pretty quickly when removing tannins. I can't answer what purgien has in it that removes tannins, but I have also never mini-cycled a tank during a recharge either...

I agree as well. A decent amount of activated carbon will do the same thing as purigen and is considerably cheaper in my neck of the woods.

i boiled my DWs for a week changing the water in the post twice a day and i still have tannis u just gotta wait it out lol

well thanks for the advice guys! ill just get used to it i guess! it really does look like what river water looks like and my oscars seem to love it

Its probably very similar to activated charcoal where it has tons of small holes where molecules enter then get stuck and don't leave. Maybe there is a charge or dipole on the surface or something to make it more effective than AC

or its an ion exchange resin not sure which though

Patience! The wood can sometime leach out tannins for awhile.
