No, if this fish is a sterlet it does not need water 55 to 65 degrees. It doesn't not need a lot of current, it needs aeration, temps in the low 70's are ok if the aeration is high enough. If it is a white then the temps should be cooler, whites are more of a cold water fish than sterlets and should be kept as cool as reasonably possible. Sand is a good idea and there should be lots of swimming space, sterlets and most sturgeon are not very flexible when it comes to swimming and need lots of open space. Live black worm,s and daphnia are good first foods but a good tiny pellet is a good idea too. I like Hikari micro pellets but any good small sinking pellet will do.
Thanks for all the info Moontanman, I have the temp at 64 at night & 68 at day (no heater or chiller). Its got an aquaclear 50 (200 gph), an oldschool whisper filter (200 gph, I think), an oldschool whisper areater (for 20-40 gal.) & a no-name brand areater (for 30 gal.). Its got a hood for a 10 gal., too.
O & I am feeding him thawed bloodworms & nutrifin max. He gets tired of the nutrifin, but will NOT stop eating the bloodworms. He eats them so much sometimes, they come out is gills & he eats them again. lol.
Blood worms are usually well taken but I would try to get him to eat some pellets. Frozen blood worms don't seem to have a lot of nutrition in my experience over the long term. Live black worms are good but variety, as in most things, is the way to go to insure he gets the nutrients he needs.
I was just looking at the site I got the sturgeon from, and noticed their pic is totally different from mine. It has longer barbels, and a shorter snout than mine. I got it HERE and the pic. is below.
