It should be noted White sturgeon is also a common trade name for Acipenser ruthenus (and assorted hybrids) especially here in the US.

The actual White is not all that common in the trade.

This is right up there with every gar being called an "alligator gar"..

Thanks richard, i've only ever seen true transmontanus for sale once. Over here in the ruthenus tend to get traded as long nose or sterlet, never seen them for sale as whites

It is not really well known and the ID of young Sturgeon can be tricky if your not used to them and know what your looking at. Really I've only seen an actual transmontanus once myself from an LFS and the majority of the fish called White in the hobby here have been ruthenus hybrids or just ruthenus. These are really the only commonly marketed fish in the hobby and at wholesalers.

Transmontanus are around and occasionally available but they are by no means common. Really you have about as good of a chance finding one as finding a Lake or Shovelnose.. They pop up only once and awile and rarely.

well, it is quite difficult to tell the difference between fry's...it goes for every fish.

Most of the aquaria will call it a white. But fortunately, they are not white...they are sterlet, I don't even know if its possible to get white sturgeon shipped into LFS due to the strict protection in Canada and strict fishing in California, Oregon, and Washington...maybe Alaska might protected them or just plain ole strict.

Just like this, its a sterlet...not a white. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=830+836+2533&pcatid=2533

It seems most sturgeon are not as readily available over in The US. Commonly traded species over here are stellatus, gueldenstaedtii, ruthenus, baerii and albino variants of ruthenus. As i say i've seen transmontanus for sale once but other species rarely available but still pop up from time to time include belugas and shovelnose though shovelnose hybrids seem to be less elusive than the real deal.

Jack, to save any more confusion in my mind, as your local to me, which is the best sturgeon for my pond, 18000 litres, I've seen 14'' stellatus around £35 or should I go with a something different?
