Sturgeon info

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lol, we are pretty limited ...

I have looked pretty extensively, and all I can find are Sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) and what appears to be White Sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) although after reading some other posts, its possible that its a hybrid of some sort, but it looks 100% different from a Sterlet. The sterlets at 3" they sell for about $15-20. The others are sold as "California Sturgeon", they are much darker in coloration, and they do not have any lighter areas of color. They are pretty much solid grey/black. And the nose is much shorter and broader than some of the other species. They go for $20-25 for a 4" fish.
They look like this, although it is listed as a Ruthenus and for much more on this site, lol. They are cheaper at my LFS

Also, I have been told that in the past people have seen
Diamond Sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii), and Shovelnose Sturgeons for sale, but I have been looking for all types of sturgeon for over a year, and I have not encountered them.

How much do the Stellatus and Albinos go for? And what sizes? What species are the albinos?
I bet shipping would cost an arm and a leg, but I may know someone else who would split the cost, if you could get a couple? Just an idea :drool:

Albino's you could get for $150 at the 12-15" mark or less if you buy in bulk or buy smaller in which case it costs less.
stellatus $50 for 10" or so, if you find out shipping details and sort everything out on your end, i could try but i don't know if you have any importing restrictions for sturgeon.

I would also like to know what kind of sturgeon that is, as I would like to buy one but dont have room for a white. Would a white sturgeon be able to live in a pond about 15'x10'x4'?

Well according to wiki they reach 6' @ 25 yrs of age (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_sturgeon) but I heard somewhere else they reach 3' in 50 yrs. Ill have to find the link. Im sure growth will be slower/less in an aquarium type environment. Also, so far mine isnt doing too well with glass and corners. Im trying to help it to see the sides with plants.
