sturgeon

Keep this in mind...they do jump, and their jump is deadly and powerful. Easy 6ft vertically(35"+ sturgeon). How do I know?...I fish for them every single winter for the past 11 years now.

And trust me on this...they do grow very slow once they reach 30" mark...probably 2" a year the most your going to get or 3. Gets even slower down to 1" per year. You can possibly try other sturgeons such as the paddle aka shovel and sterlit since they are a lot smaller. But for a white, just keep in mind...a 5ft sturgeon can jump 10ft vertically which means you need a extreme heavy duty lid. Unless you want to have some dinner.
But overall, DON'T STICK YOUR HAND IN ITS MOUTH, THEY CAN CRUSH YOUR FINGERS IF MISTAKEN AS FOOD.
And keep away from the diamond scutes, RAZOR SHARP...I've lost a couple of them while fishing and they cut through my 130lbs mono leader, just an example how razor are they once they really use it. Other than that, nice and kind fish. And don't mix it with any aggressive species, the aggressive species will end up dead instead with cuts...:D

The river in Washing he was most likely referring to is the Columbia. I fish the Snake, Columbia, Salmon, Clearwater, Kootenai, and Tillamook Bay. Wild Sturgeon in the Columbia with access to salt water andfresh grow significantly faster. BC has a pamphlet that details the average age and weight of a sturgeon caught on the Frasier. The pamphlet is not very accurate because Idaho White Sturgeon grow much much slower.
