White sand will only bleach out your bichirs except ornates. If you wanna get black sand, get Tahitian moon sand. Many people are using them and it never harms their fish. I've used it too in the past.

I think you might need 40-50lbs of sand for 48x20x24.

Let me get this straight, some sands can make bichirs and fish lose their color? Will pool filter sand do this or is it safe?
