Success! Weening Juvenile Gar Off Live Food

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I gave up on the pellets, spent like $45 in past couple years on various products and my gar doesn't want anything to do with, my datnoids will even spit them out. My fish seem really picky though, have heard of gar accepting pellets, so you might have better luck.

Congrats!!! Just got my gar off live 2 months ago, and have had him for almost 10 years. It a tough thing to do. Got him on frozen bloodworms and beefhearts. So much better than starved, diseased, and never know what else feeder fish. That should save you some time running to the LFS.

hey mate, what was your method of getting them onto non-live food? I am sure alot of people on this forum would be interested to know.

Congrats on the gar...it makes life much simpler!

Once they start feeding on prepared food from tongs or a stick...it is only a matter of time until they feed without it. From my experience anyway.

LOL sorry just wondering this but what is white bate?

Google image search will be your friend in regards to that question.....

Bad news though...not really that bad actually... but my gar has started to eat alot less than usual... only like 2 pieces of fish a day.. when before he was eating like 6-8 pieces everyday for the last 2 weeks... he put on some serious weight in the last 2 weeks though. I don't really know what is wrong with him but my dad guessed that maybe the fish was hurting itself when it accidentally bit the metal tongs/tweezers... tried switching over to plastic tongs in the last couple of days with only minor success... will see how I go.

He may just have been underfed and really hungry. Now that he's fattened up a bit, he doesn't need to eat as much food at each feeding. As long as he doesn't start losing weight, then I don't think the decreased feeding is anything to worry about. My Florida gars were the same way after I first got them. Several weeks of frantic gobbling down everything in site, then once they had gained some size and weight, they started eating less than they use to. But they're still big and fat :D.
