I was thinking about getting one a putting into a grow out tank.... but iv read they die easily, refuse to eat. All sorts.....

Could anybody give me any info on this? the LFS only have 3 so would like to be able to go tomorrow or the next day? 30 gallon grow out, 2x bristlenose i was trying to breed

They are less hardier than a regular Jack, but IMO they are getting better and more hardy. It all depends on the breeder though. A lot of them are bred within the same gene pool and that is why they tend to have more health issues. If the breeder of the ones at your LFS didn't breed them correctly then they will more than likely have problems as well. It all depends on the quality of them. EBJD are becoming more common though, so breeders have a lot more options to breed outside of the same gene pool. That's why they are becoming more hardier as the years go by. I think few years down the road from now they will be just as easy to grow out as a regular jack.

The EBJDs you get nowadays are not that delicate anymore, especially the ones bred by hobbyists who avoid inbreeding…so depending on where your LFS got them from, they could be raised as easily as regular dempseys. As far as your set up goes, if it’s a one incher that you’re getting, a 30 gallon will be sufficient for a while and eventually, you’ll need a bigger tank.

Source: I breed/raise ebjds and have purchased them from different LFS and hobbyists.

I have a male that's about 8.5 inches I'd say from eyeballing it. Last time I measured it was about 8 months ago and it was 7". It has grown as fast as my regular male that I used to have did. Not a very picky eater either. I raised mine on NLS Thera A+ 3 mm pellets, frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms and now I feed him freeze dried bloodworms and shrimps from Omega One. Unlike a lot of them, he also can show some attitude. I'll share a couple pictures of mine;

The "regular" JD is as spectacular looking (and fun to have!) as any cichlid you could want. I don't understand the need to "improve" on what Mother Nature nailed the first time.

EBJD are natural, they don't make it in the wild because they stand out plus are not as aggressive as their regular siblings.

Small ebjd are a roll of the dice. People are saying they are getting better but I've noticed the exact opposite.

Ebjd are not natural. At the very least they were super line bred originally.

How do you define natural? It is a naturally occurring gene. Both parents have to have it. Are redheads not natural? They require certain genes...just saying.

hmm, alot to think about. The LFS are one of the few in my area that have many "harder to find" cichlids. The three they have are intense blue they look good stock, very active straight at the front of the tank, they would probably tell me there from good stock, but without seeing the parents this could be wrong. I may take the risk, they seem worth it, there £30 here, so would be around 60USD

From what iv looked into then, the main problem is IP's? what are the main signs of parasites, and what are the main indications theres a prob with an EBJD

I get what you are saying. Its not a naturally occurring gene though. Dont you think with all the people that have bred jd over the years someone else would have noticed ebjd fry in their spawns? The story of ebjd origin is a bunch of crap. If the breeder told everybody he got unicorns from breeding two horses that must have carried the gene would you believe him?
I am a natural redhead by the way.
