Do you know their scientific name?
Its White sucker (Catostomus commersonii). Very common sucker in United States.

Does the meat taste funny seeing as they are bottom feeders and eat a lot of dead/rotting things?
They taste better in cold clear water in winter/spring, I dont eat any suckers in summer because of muddy flavor.

uhhhhhh huhh cant beat it! like bowfin in the south awsome eating!!!!!!!!:headbang2
Never tasted bowfin but heard they tastes terrible (probably because its not smoked) but i wont mind try these smoked bowfin.

I snagged a nice sucker today.(yes i let it go unharmed) I also lost about a 15 pound quillback carpsucker broke my line like the 3rd time i had it up to the bank.

I really enjoy fishing for under-utilzed fish. I often catch carp, sucker, bowfin, and Freshwater Drum. Bowfin is definitely my favorite. Toughest fight pound for pound I've ever had.

The best thing is that roughfish season is open all year in Minnesota. I never caught carp, dogfish, drum and mooneye before but I planning to.
