Here is my main thread- https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/240-gallon-build-thread.685317/

I am posting a question on here, because my main showpiece was to grow out a motoro Ray, with the tank having weird holes drilled I had to go with canister instead of sump.

I've got an fx5, 2- aquatop cf500uv.
I have 2 trays for mechanical media and 6 for bio in the cf500s, and two trays of bio in the fx6. Heaters will be inline

Total I should be able to hold is around 8 litres of media?

Do you guys think this would be enough for one Ray, I know as he gets bigger he will produce more waste. So I suppose I won't be able to have that many tank mates with him?

Tank mates I was looking at is a fire eel I have and possibly a jardini

Do you already have the ray? What size is it? how long will this tank be used as a growout?

That should be good for one ray as long as you keep up on wc. When I had rays I had 2 fx5s on a 180 and did two 50% wc weekly

I currently do not have the Ray yet. There is a Ray breeder here that is expecting motoro X Leopoldi in 1.5-2 months

Tank will be used for a couple of months, I do plan on upgrading to a larger tank, as I have a new house I am moving into

I plan on using 2 50 gallon barrels for water changes. I will most likely be doing at least 2 water changes per week.

Sounds like a great plan. The tank will be well cycled before you add the ray. Plus the ray will be a pup so you will have time to plan your next move.

Have fun :)

As long as your tap water decent no need to have water set aside. Just use prime during wc

When I go to check out the rays what are some things to look for? Do I choose the largest one or smaller one?

his last litter.. It was a motoro X hystrix I believe?

The leopoldi is the one that tagged the female motoro for this litter

And the last picture is a motoro at a shop.. Most likely won't purchase him as they're asking like $700 for it!

The things I look for are the most active ray, and a fat base of the tail...after that it's pattern and finally size. I personally like a pup that seems to be a hyperactive trouble maker, to me active ray=healthy ray...plus a super active ray is fun to watch!

Watch them eat. That usually helps me decide. No dents in head, hips showing that type of thing.

Biggest thing is to pass on that 700 dollar motoro lol

Leo/Motoro pups change a lot so you'll be in for a fun ride. I've seen some come out with some wild patterns. Hence my love for hybrids, unlimited potential.

Like above said active and not skinny . A healthy ray should always be active and will always be blowing sand looking for food. Also have him feed them in front of you if they don't eat walk away. Rays have very fast metabolism and can wither away very fast. You can start seeing there hips with in a few days of them not eating and there head will start to sink in a week.
