if you've only got to pups in a 8x2x2 and no other fish 1 will be fine for now but get the sump up and running asap because they grow quick but last resort just get a second hand canister filter till sump done.how big your sump going to be?

Im planning on a fluidized k1 moving bed sump with about 15-20 litres of k1 media, I will have 6 discus in the tank but the sump is next on my list once the tank has been fitted out for stingray's (tiled, sand, handful of plants)

should be fine 30% water change every 4 days, watch with the plants my p14 loves plants now biting he way through more java fern but like plants help keep my nitrate down.

Awesome thanks, but i'll have the auto dripper going so I won't need to WC that often. I'll throw up a thread once all this is under way (I start holidays next week)

Have you disassembled the FX5 and cleaned out the motor? If you're using sand it could have sand trapped in there causing the noise, I've had that problem before and a quick disassemble and clean got it working like new again.

I would do at least 2 of the FX5 and a sump.

+1, even if its the whole motor assembly its self. I have seen the whole assembly locally for $45-50. also maybe replacement seal around lid?

Lighter sand in most cases promotes better color and the sting is black because of the membrane so lighter sand as well for that.

the stinger is black???? No, the stinger is white and in lighter sand it is harder to find.
Also, i feel 1 fx5 on an 8x2x2 is not sufficient regardless of what fish are in it.

The membrane on the outside of the stinger is black, at least on every stingray I have ever seen. The stinger itself is white, but when it first falls off the membrane is still on it so it remains black for a few days. This is when I always find mine.
