puppies are great! so cuddly so cute so adorable so precious so so so
much trouble!! train properly?? is your g/f experienced? accidents here n there, chewables & teething (like those nice open toes, your best lofters, your nice white sneakers, your leather jacket, your furniture, your whateve is availble - & doggie toys & doggie chews won't do cuz they know better!), crying/whining when you leave them alone for long periods, crying/whining if you crate them or if you keep them out of your room at nite (& once you give in then you're stuck)
many small dogs are trainable but bigger dogs require more discipline training otherwise they may do as they please.
we bought an akita puppy - all the so's mentioned above! we went to petco for training & we kept at it ourselves for a long time. she is now 11 1/2 yrs old & a great dog. & btw, this is the all time shedder breed! so not for you.
one last thing! your life changes (like they say with a newborn baby!) but the difference is you can take your baby with you & change diapers & feed the babe on the go. with a pup - you must rush back from your outside activities (family & friends get togethers, dates, day trips, work, etc.) that was a real pain! tho I love this dog I would not go thru the puppy years again! you gots to be a really big dog lover (& maybe you both are) to go thru this. it can be painful & stressful but also satisfying (oxymoron?)
if you do take the plunge for a pup (whether pure breed or adoption & yes mixed breeds are hardier) make sure you get it fixed before it turns 1yr. some local places may do it free but definitely charge you less than if you wait till after a yr old.
woof luck!
