In general I agree with you, but you CAN grow them out and sell them, so why not use them? I've had a small (three) clown loach school for several years now, and they're all fat and happy. I think they were chunky 3.5-4" fish when I got them, and they're chunkier 6-7" fish now. Not likely. They tend to get ignored and can defend themselves with those spurs.
