Suggestions for an overly aggressive fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a suggestion, this probably won't be as popular but I've done this with my NGT with great success. My NGT is bat***t crazy, he's killed many many fish, he's 14" now doesn't like any flat round fish.

I had 9 tiger scats for a while, and my NGT reduced that number to 3, I decided to sell them and get 3 big wide bar silver dollars. Now I'm left with 1 silver dollar. So what I've done is I have trimmed my NGT's tail fin down by an inch. Now this doesn't really reduce his aggression but will make him slow so that he won't be able to catch the other fish and if he can't catch them he won't be able to damage them.

Now its a good workout for both my silver dollar and my NGT :). The tail fin grows back btw so it isn't permanent.

This sounds like a cruel and barbaric solution. Please don't mutilate your fish to make a situation work for you.
This is just fuel for animal rights groups that are closing in on the hobby.
After reading the above, who can blame them?

You're right , it won't be popular, in fact it's stupid. I would highly recommend no one follows this advice.

yeah that sounds a lot like those so called conservationists who trim the horns off of rhinos to supposedly protect them from poachers.

besides whats the point in having a beautiful fish if youre going to maim it? seems counterintuitive. at least the rhino guys are making money.

I usually don't like to argue on forums and try to advice / help where I can but I feel like I have to make my point clear. Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 you're talking about mutilating...? Do you even know how my NGT looks? Please stop assuming things. Here's a fun fact for you, all the flamingos kept in open air zoos, how do you think they prevent them from flying away? They trim their wings so they can't fly. And here is a picture of my NGT that I just took, I've had this guy since he was 4", and is the biggest NGT that I've seen. Also, all those people walking around with parrots on their shoulders, how do you think they prevent them from flying away...? Is it inhumane? Maybe, but trimming a fish's tail (which grows back) is definitely better than what we do with birds.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. And please check out the picture of my fish before shutting out and calling names.

I don't want to argue here either, just gonna offer my opinion. Your NGT is indeed very nice. Colors are great and otherwise a great looking fish. But I think he would be much nicer if you didn't cut his tail down. Why not just keep him with fish he won't kill, if he doesn't like round ones? Or his own tank.

Yeah I agree with everything you have said. And he does look a lot better with a full tail, which will grow back in a month at most.
As to why I don’t keep him with Fish he won’t kill... well I didn’t know what types of fish he doesn’t like until I tried them. And now I do. There are only so many fish that can stand the wrath of a 14” ngt. And as to why he’s not in his own tank, it’s mainly because I can’t afford another Aquarium at the moment. He’ll be in his own space as soon as I get the tank. Trust me.
I just don’t like the fact that people here on MFK are just waiting to criticize a fellow member for just trying to help. And again stating more obvious things here: if OP can afford to keep their fish in a separate than then they should do that. But if they’re monetarily constrained just like I am, I offered a suggestion.
Furthermore, Fish feel pain. But I don’t think they feel any pain when their fins are torn / ripped. This is an opinion, I’ll look into it more

Sorry to sound so harsh, I don't mean to personally insult you and yes your fish does look great and very healthy. I accept you are trying to help but it's not a solution that should b encouraged in my opinion, again it's just my opinion but I'm sure you would prefer not to do this or see other people doing it to their fish. I think sometim s you just have to accept a fishes aggression is what it is and if it won't tolerate other fish then keep it by itself or rehome it.
I had a salvini I loved but had to get rid of it as it was causing chaos, he now lives happily in a display tank at the LFS and as much as I didn't like giving him away I know it
was the right decision.
