Suggestions for an uncommon SA dwarf cichlid

So before I carry out my krib breeding plans, are there any more suggestions for cichlids ranging from 2.5-4" that would be fairly easy to breed, but aren't super common (like rams)? Just don't want to commit to something and then find out a few days later that there were cichlids I liked more.

Get a subscription to Cichlidae.com and go through each genus. Every cichlid that's known to exist is listed there. If you find something you like, do some research and see if they're available.

West Africans in general cost more. If you don't mind about the whole common, uncommon, thing, you could always spring for Pelvicachromis pulcher (common krib). I got some recently myself because they are so cheap and a fun spawn.

Yeah, but now you guys have tempted me with the taeniatus. And I think it looks better. LOL

I would rather spend the extra money and breed something no one near me is breeding. It's the reason I want to breed my geo red heads. I hunted high and low for them and the cheapest I could find without paying for shipping was $30 each! And getting some shipped was only cheaper if I bought 8 or more, which was still over $125.

$30! Ouch. I think I will stick to browsing the Internet and threads from various forums. It's more work, but I can take that $30 and sink it into some new cichlids. :) Or tank upgrades. LOL

Totally worth it though. Great articles. Though if you want to just look across the species, there are small pictures without pay access. You can then google a name if you find the pic interesting.

I don't know if I could go without Cichlidae now. Did take me a few years to convince myself to drop the cash though.

Don't get too caught up in the whole uncommon game. For the most part, none of us are going to make a significant profit moving fry. The market saturates too fast. And shipping imo is WAAY more trouble than the money it earns. I have kept a ton of fish in the past three years, and I bought six regular ole convicts last month. The most common fish there is, but I never get tired of seeing them guard fry every month!

It's not about the money for me. Yes, I want it to bring in some money to make it a little more sustainable, but I just want to breed something not many others are. Tons of people are breeding rams and apistos, but I want something that isn't commonly found. Of course the uncommon part will help a little but in moving some fry, but again, not in it for the money. :)

And I may end up getting a membership eventually, but for now, I only have my three tanks currently with limited room for growth. Plus I don't plan on living in Florida for too much longer. Will be moving to NC or SC in a few years. Once I have a bigger house with more space to keep my cichlids (I have been promised a sealed/insulated garage by my girlfriend), I will expand my tank collection and will have much more use for the membership. :)
