how many kenyi should i get if it will be a mixed mbuna tank? like 1 male 3 females?
What else are you stocking? Kenyi are one of the most aggressive mbunas, so I'd be careful with the rest of your stock list, if you decide on Kenyi's.

Yes, you could go with that mix and be fine. The males will turn yellow and the females will stay blue. I wouldn't be afraid of mixing some aulonacara species into the mix either. They will all co exsist just fine. You could go with aulonacara masioni or Lwanda. Or a Blue azurus. All of those will work fine together IMO. I have all of them in a 75 and it is a pretty stunning tank. Vistitors to my home always ask if it is a saltwater tank. Then when they find out that it is freshwater, they can't believe how beautiful the freshwater fish can be. :)

Keep me posted on what you end up getting.

i already have a red zebra and a maingano in there, and i would like to get more of those as well as some other mbuna. i'm weary of mixing such aggro mbunas with peacocks. the lwanda are stunning, however in a 55 i think aggression would get ugly

Auratus' are beautiful fish. You could do a 1/3 with them, no?

i think i should mention that i would like the species i keep to breed and be able to keep the fry in the same tank.

when dealing with Africans I have always had luck mixing many different species. I feel the key is "the more the merrier." IMO Having many in one tank is ok given some hiding spots and good water change schedule + Filtration. My 75's stocklist is

5 Electric Yellows
1 Red Zebra
2 Lwanda
1 Masioni
3 yo yo loach
2 Red tail loach
1 Kenyi
1 blue Azurus
1 Zig Zag eel (I thought he was gone, then he appeared in that tank after a year)
4 high reef afras

They all get along. Just giving you some ideas. It seems the more that are in there the more diffused the aggression gets.

but with a 55 gallon, doesn't that mean that the lwanda (if i kept them) would face much aggression from my more aggro africans (i.e. maingano, zebra, demasoni)? i do agree in overstocking in this type of tank and i will ensure i have enough filtration. that i am not worried about. i'm really good with my WC too

Honesly the male lwanda I have acts like king of the tank. No one messes with him :) He just swims around gracefully while the mbuna like to hang close to the rocks. All have been bred succesfully. I usually take the fry and put them into a breeding net for a few weeks to get them goin. Then I put them back in and grow them out before trading them in at the LFS

thats cool. i believe that but you won't believe this...... my juvie male maingano (only 2 inches) is the king of my tank. He has the dominant colors and everything. he is even dominant over the red zebra i have that is fully grown (at least 5- 6 inches)
