I was just about to say that.

Nice Tort!
That was my first thought as well.

Cool tort.

Well I hope you have done your reserch and have LOTS of indoor and outdoor space, this guys are the behemots of the tortoise world and as grown ups they are basicly big eating and pooping machines that need a lot of electric energy in lamps and such to stay healty;) You are looking at a VERy long comitement there. And yes dont give them any letuce, they need high fiber and calcium, low phosphorus diets in order to trive and to build nice and smood shells, letuce doesant give them any of thouse. Dandilions, spineless opuncia, hibiscus, timoty hay and grasses are among the most inportant things in their diet, in case thouse aint avaible, dark green leafys will do but thouse are really important and you must make every efort you can to give them thouse(wait for at least 6 mouths before using a poted hibiscus that you may purchase and dont collect weds nearby high ways , the ideal is to grow your own weds)

It is romaine in the pic, not iceburg so yea...I do give him grasses but he doesnt eat them much. I already have a the UVB light rated at 10.0 which is correct for the species. I'm well aware of their size and housing requirements and i do plan to make a turtle box for him in the future. I've been busy doing alot of research even before purchase. And I still try to get as much information I can find now. So far, so good.

nice tort. sounds like youve done your research, just hope thats a big turtle box! you can bypass the huge indoor requirements and lamps by building him an outdoor enclosure for the fair weather months

Yea but Rhode Island doesnt have many "fair weather" months for african tortoises lol. I might be getting a job down in texas or arizona eventually and that would be perfect for him. I'd just have to make sure he doesnt burrow his way out of the yard lol

Letuce is letuce,it aint no good:grinno: There is no reason to use it as there are so many much more healtier choices;) And its going to take much more then one tortoise box:D

An 8ft by 8ft tortoise box? And I've seen plenty of sites that say romaine is ok. And I do supplement with timothy hay as of right now. I'm growing certain grasses/weeds that they enjoy and are good for them in a small terra cotta pot. It will take a bit to grow but when it does he'll have fresh salad pretty much every day.

Dont be studborn, dude:grinno: that thing is allmost the same thing as iceberg and will deform your tortoises for life(and that putting alone watery feces, parasitary insfestacions and some guys here lost birds for letuce because of nitrates:eek:). Do you want them to grow big healty and smood or stunned, sick and crippled? And timoty hay is a main corse not a suplement. Get yourself on the supermarket, buy some water cress, chycory greens, turnip greens, mustard greens and trow the letuce away. If somebody is telling you letuce is ok then they dont know what their talking about. Also feeding letuce to a hachling is not the same thing as feeding it to a 3 foot adult, just like when you were litle your parents dint give you stuff like jerky and beer;) As for space, well the ideal is a copple of hectares:D If not a beedroom size enclosure with a outdoor exit will do. A 8x8 terrarium is what I have in my basement for my 12 inch male yellow head tortoise and is way to small for even a medium size sulcata. Beleave me Ive been doing it for 16 plus years:popcorn:
