Do you really need aeration under the biomedia? I would think with it falling through the biomedia it would aerate itself plenty. I guess its not too much trouble to add an air pump with an airstone rope or something under the media...

Need ... no

Is it advantageous... Yes

The submerged bacteria will be healthier for it.

And like you said, it's not any trouble to put a loop in the bottom.

so im just curious what design the OP went with because i want to make a w/d as well but i want to find the most efficient design i guess.
