Sump flow!?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
"It sounds to me more like a problem with the sump design itself rather than the pump or the overflow? "

yeah I'll second that...

I do think it is a problem with the sump and i am about ready to sell the sump and build a new one!!!!!!!!!! I need a sump that i can rely on for a week while i am gone. Im about ready to sell the whole setup and move on!! What do you think 400$.

If this is as it appears...

I'd remove the 3rd and 5th baffles (Counting from the left)

Otherwise go DIY and just get some plastic draws and place in an open vessel.

In my opinion - this is a double intake sump designed to have one intake on each side and the pump in the middle.

This is what I mean

Is there another section of this sump behind the black screen?

Last night I was thinking that he needed dual filter chambers. It's hard to tell with the dark photos making everything inside the filter hard to see but I think you're right, the filter does have dual chambers. They do seem small though and won't be able to handle that much flow if the media is restrictive (e.g., too fine).

I was looking at the specs for the Marineland wet/dry filters and the single chamber models are rated for a max of 700 gph while the dual chambered ones are rated for 1400 gph. This is consistent with my experience that the typical single chamber wet/dry filter will only handle ~600 gph.

Yes there is another section behind the sump and the guy that i bought the tank from used this for saltwater so he had a skimmer and other pieces in there. This was a custom acrylic sump that the guy had made but i hate!!! The design!!! The sump has no room for wet/dry biological filtration. I think i'm going to build my own sump from a glass aquarium. Would a 20 gallon high be to small for the sump? If so i would use a 35 gallon. (by the way im only 14 so understand that these are my first sumps).
