Sump in Crawl Space

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've determined the head height for the pump will be right around 12 feet. Should I go with two of the 4-MDQX-SC Little giant pumps, or one mag 36. I'm not sure on the reliability of the mag's, but if I hear good things thats what I would like to go with.

Thanks!

Here's a few shots of what I've done so far. The pipe isn't glued, but I wanted to test the DIY bulkheads. I think there will be three separate tanks in the sump (trashcan, 2 tubs). Still need some help on the pumps though.

instead of the little giants (which are great) check out the sequence pumps. I use a sequence dart and I couldn't be happier. I've only seen 1 person complain (on here) about their sequence pump and their customer service rep actually joined to post and help solve the issue............pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

FWIW I have a little giant pump too. I love the pump, but I like the sequence better. The model I have is a dart (check out it's power consumption too;))

I took a look at that pump and my biggest fear is the max head height @ 12'. My setup will put me at right around 12' and maybe closer to 13' so I think they wont work. I missed my opportunity at the mag-drive 36, so I'm thinking about one of these possibly Danner Pro HY-4000. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these. It looks like I'd get around 1,500 GPH according to this site. which for my 220 would be quite a strong turnover, but I don't plan on putting any other filters on this tank.

Here's a pic as well.

then check out the barracuda. 2,730gph@12ft and only consumes 253watts

Even if you want to reduce the flow a bit you can choke it down with a ball valve and it'll use even less power. They have a kick ass warranty as well.

My fiance is going to hate me when I show her that this is the pump I need. She said she would buy me what pump I need for my birthday in two weeks. I think that the barracuda does look like one heck of a option and the aquarium guys have a great price on it $257. Looks like I might have to sell one of my 75gallons to pay for the setup of this 220.

Some more shots of the new tubs I purchased today that are also connected by 2" DIY bulkheads. The trash can will actually be turned for the final connection, but I'm still testing these bulkheads. I left the first try over night and it only leaked from the unglued PVC connections. I also have the fiance set on the Barracuda pump, we just have to order it. (hopefully tonight or tomorrow.) The pump will be external plumbed outside of the last tub. My goal with the two tubs was to allow enough water for the pump to pull in, but still enough space in the case of a power outage.

Finally you get to see some shots of the tank, stand and back of the canopy!!! Inside of the canopy is is painted white (I got lazy on cleaning up the back) and will house 6 CFL daylight bulbs. :headbang2

I really like the creativity of that setup. I can't wait to see the final product. i hope you take lots of step by step picks for those of us who are still new to the hobby and still trying to learn about these DIY sumps and such.

Another update on the sump!!! First off I've ordered the barracuda pump from marinedepot.com and it should be here next week, but I have to wait till my birthday on the 3rd until I get to play with it!:headbang2

Shown below are the pictures of all the sump tanks glued and connected together. They are filled right know and I'm just going to let them sit and see if any leaks or other issues pop-up. I also included a shot of where the sump will sit against the back wall of the crawl space. You can see there's already quite a bit of moisture that has seeped in to the crawl space. I live in Indiana and needless to say all that rain the Midwest has gotten needs somewhere to go. Unfortunately some of it's in my crawl space.

*** Right before the the valve there is a one way so I do not have to worry about my return overflowing in the case of a power outage.
