Sump in Crawl Space

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This looks like it's going to be awesome! Congrats on the pump!

What part of the state are you in? (Hoosiers are taking over LOL)

Well it's clear I like to take pictures so here are some more of what I accomplished this afternoon as well as a shot of the room where it will go and the overflows I made the day after i got the tank :nilly:

I was waiting on someone to help me get the tank off the stand, but instead I just chose to muscle the darn thing a foot or so onto the desk that was behind the stand. Needless to say I'll need some help getting it back!

More shots of the stand and canopy inside. I've reinstalled the lights into the canopy after it was stained and painted. I'm using 6 - 13 watt daylight CFl's. It might actually be brighter than I wanted, but I can always unscrew a few of them. With these bulbs if you keep the light a little lower you get the shimmering affect you get from natural light in water. As you can see these bulbs are also a much whiter light than the normal CFL.

The tank should be moved in a couple of days and I can begin the rest of the plumbing fun!!!

Tank is finally in place and I can get to plumbing it out. I wont get the pump until tomorrow (B-day), but I'm out of town till Monday so I have to wait even longer. My goal is to basically have it all plumbed and ready to go so all I have to do is connect the pump and go!!!

The pictures make it look a bit darker than it really is.

The hood and stand both look really good, can't wait to see pix of the finished sump.

Well everything is plumbed up and attempting to run, but about $600 in a pump and plumbing parts I have a complete failure. The drop of nearly 7 feet from the back of the tank to the filter is so ridiculously loud that unless I was going for a waterfall effect I'm just out of luck. I slowed the whole thing down by closing ball valves on the overflows and it's still horrible. I was running almost 30% on the pump and it would still overflow the tank because of the slow drainage.

Right now I'm just looking for ideas on overflows for this tank so I can get it running. My DIY design clearly junk and Now I just have to find something else. I did a quick search and found CPR boxes, at marinedepot.

Really just wishing I would have purchased 2 or 3 FX5's for the cost I have in the setup and be running smooth and beautiful. :barf:

That's a bummer, but don't be too discouraged.

I used a CPR box for years before I got my drilled tank, they actually work very well. The largest one uses a 1.5" drain and can handle 1600 GPH. They can handle a ton of water, a lot more than a "u-tube" type overflow. I'm sure some people have had good luck with DIY over-the-back overflows, but those things always look sketchy to me.

Make sure you vent the drain-pipe and it shouldn't be too noisy, especially if you go with 1.5" piping. If it still seems loud you could box in the drain-pipe with some insulation board.

I made a Durso style standpipe in my CPR overflow. The overflow is dead silent. The only thing I can hear is a bit of water rushing through the tubes, but that could be eliminated with a ball valve that would help keep the pipe "full" so there would be less splashing.

Needless to say I've calmed down a bit since last night. Had been at work for a few hours and was so ready to finally turn it on when things went all to hell. I got up this morning and adjusted heavily on quite a few aspects. I pushed the overflows down further so it will move faster (there is a lot of room in the sump so it can handle no pumping), I closed one return line so it now only enters from one side of the tank and I can control it better, I also cranked back the flow on the overflow until it's nearly silent. I still would like more flow, but right now I'm content with what I have although I think I can still make some changes.

I did have a leak last night that I thought I would have to fix. Needless was I surprised when I found out it was not glued and it popped loose while I was working on it and a 4200GPH pump began shooting water across my crawl space. About 10 gallons later I unplugged it and then glued the piece :). Now I just need to dampen the vibrations of the pump through the lines, which I'm off to lowes to look for ideas on that.
