sump noob help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sounds right to me. You can use the holes that are already in it - your choice what you want to do with them.

You'll basically need overflows that will get the water to the sump, the water goes through the sump, and then you use a pump to pump that water back into tank. A pump is constantly pumping water from your sump to your tank, the tank overflows and drains into the sump.

Use the holes for your overflows and returns. When i did mine, I used the bigger holes for my overflows and the smaller holes for the returns.

u said drilled for '' powerheads '' he/u might of meant bulkheads

yah i meant bulkheads sorry. not powerheads .. that was my bad. so with these holes already drilled or whatever .. does that take care of this whole overflow thing etc etc. so id already have a way to get water to my sump and back? i just need hoses maybe and a pump maybe if not included .. then media. is that what u guys are saying?

well he had the tank set up for saltwater so he has it drilled already for powerheads .. since i'm using it for freshwater, would I be able to convert these holes somehow to be used for the sump to save me some time and trouble as opposed to using some sort of overflow .. or? i havent even seen the tank or sump yet .. which is why im asking these questions. if i had seen the sump i could figure out what it meant but im still confused. also i'm assuming if he has this sump already built .. i assumed he used it therefor probably has a pump also. not sure if its included but if it is or isn't ... can someone tell me what kind of pump i'm looking for .. i don't know scratch about what kinda pump i would be looking for? what type of pump am i looking for? how powerful? etc

as far as set up goes, you wont really have to make any major changes. though you will need to make sure everything is cleaned thoroughly.

if the tank is already drilled, youre halfway there.
you will need to find out if the holes are bare, or if they have the bulkhed fitting in place.

just because he has the pieces, does not mean they will be included in the sale. this goes for the plumbing, the pump, and even the bulkhead fittings.
chances are, youre getting a bare tank and a bare sump, and he is keeping the other components to set up another tank.

if this is the case, you will need bulkhead fittings the size of the holes in the tank (available online), PVC for plumbing the bulkheads and return (available at your local hardware store), a return pump that will give you 5-10x turnover in your tank (availible at your LFS or online), and media for the sump (scrubbies availible right here on MFK. ;) )

deffinatly most helpful post yet. everyone pitched in bits and pieces but you did the full job. thanks a million. yeah he told me the tank is drilled and has water tight bulkheads so sounds like thats the hardest part .. and the sump i mentioned .. so its only possibly the pump and maybe tubing ..

also he is selling off all of his tanks. he is getting out of the hobby so he is selling like 12x tanks etc .. so i cant see him really stripping any smaller parts out of the deal but ya never know. i guess ill just have to get it and take it from there.

anymore help is appreciated. and as for media .. what is everyone recomending .. tell me brand names .. where to buy .. relative price and around how much i might need.

im pumpeddd for the 220. while im on it even though it has nothing to do with filtration .. any advice on safest way to transport this tank. i work at / uncle owns and rv dealership so i might grab a skido trailer and move it with this. but best way to keep the tank safe inside of that?

the return pump is going to be the most expensive part of the system, so if he is not keeping it for himself, he may have/ or be selling it separately. ask him if he has it, and is willing to sell it.
for a 220, youre looking at a pump that will push 1200-2000gph. quiet one makes one rated at around 1300gph that will work for your tank (as long as you dont plan on heavily stocking it). you can find the quiet one5000 for around $100 online if you look around. you can also look into mag drive or rio pumps.

as far as media goes, have a look here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=285900
brother zennzzo has what you need. ;)
