I've seen a ton of info on building your own sump and overflow system. The only think I have not read is what the sump has to be made out of. I know it's suppose to be about 1/4 the size of your tank, bigger is better. I've seen both tanks and plastic bins used. Does it really matter? I can buy a fairly large place bin for only a couple of bucks. If it is ok to use a bin, the setup is still the same? I'm assuming you can still put pieces of plexiglass into a plastic bin.

As long as it is structurally sound and safe for the fish it doesn't matter what you use.

Makes sense. As far as the egg crates, do they come in all sizes? Is there a certain amount of space I should have everything spaced? I'd like to start it tomorrow.

egg crates?
you mean eggcrate (as in the lighting diffuser?)
sorry, im not sure what youre asking.
if you go with the plastic bin, youre looking at using a 3 drawer bid, or 5gal bucket to hold the media.
do a quick in the DIY section, and you will find lots of builds with complete write ups. im sure you can get some great ideas here.

Does putting a heater in the sump really keep the tank heated properly?

yes.

It's not exact. My sump is 2 to 4 degrees warmer than my tank. But who cares. I want my tank at 80 so I set my sump heater to 84.

To me it's worth it, the fish can't break the heater when it's in the sump. And I don't like the look of the heater in the tank.
