Sump problem- help asap please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hmmmm........been on here 5 years. Didn't see it being a "rule of thumb". Yeah, I know "we" don't do most things the same as salties. I mentioned it because they have to be even more conscience of water due to salinity. Have had a 240 on a 50 gal sump successfully a long time.

It's preferred, didn't say it wouldn't work. I know the OP and he cares about my input, so do what you want I don't care. Are you a troll or a know it all? I don't care to get in a pissing contest with you over semantics.

I answered and also asked questions. I got what I perceived to be arrogance in return and threw some of my smarta** back. Not trying to offend anyone. I am here to learn and help where I can.

In all fairness, the biggest sump you can afford/fit is always the best approach generally speaking, especially in a reef system. More room for live rock and equipment and a larger system volume adds stability. 1/3 has been a guide for reefers for years.

For freshwater, which requires far less equipment and control over water perameters, you can get by with anything that "works" for your situation. I aim for around 25%, but it's just a guide. Some are more, some less. I use old tanks, totes, cans .... Whatever fits and holds what I need it too.

My next build is a 135 with a 55 gallon sump because I got it for cheap and it fits. Much more than 1/3, but under tank space is kinda dead anyways so why not.
