Sump Pump Question. I know I know ANOTHER ONE!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok I have looked around and there arent any local retailers that carry the watchdog so I will have to keep hunting.

But I wanted to ask you all, Seeing as I only have a 55gallon, would the mag 9.5 be to much, my head height will only be about 4-5feet. That pump will do around 700 GPH at that height.

I know that you want to turn the water over at least 10x an hour so I feel it should be ok, but at the same note I dont want to blast the fish around lol. I am thinking that if I stick with the 9.5 I will build a return diffuser for it so it isnt just one outlet port, maybe turn it into a three head outlet.

Let me know please I really appreciate it!!!

i believe 3-10x water turnover. i think 600 might even be too much.
I use a mag drive 9.5 with 5ft of head on my 220 with a 50gal sump and i have to valve down the pump as i just cant get enough overflow (even with 1 1/4 pipe).
That mag would drain your 10-20 gal sump in a hurry.
It also uses 93w.

Id suggest maybe just adding an ac 110 or even a 70 on top of your current filter or maybe a small canister.

2x Hob filter @ 300gph will be far cheaper and easier than a sump with a 650gph at 5ft.

thanks for your suggestion, I am literally shopping for it as we speak and I was thinking I could just put a ball valve on the return line and restrict the flow. Or I am just going to switch to the mag 7, which will be perfect I think. The only reason I wanted the extra flow was because of the fact I know the more times you can cycle the water the better it is for the fish. But at the same point I dont want to blow the fish out of the tank.

I was thinking to just restrict the flow with the 9.5 because I may up the tank size in the near future.

I have already purchased everything except for the pump.

I am sic of seeing small debris floating in my tank, and I know that the HOB i have is suppose to be 300 GPH and if thats true it is doing a poor job, it maybe less but i dont know for sure. I figure go big and throttle it down.

In a sump the slower you go actually is the better way, I would be turning your tank 4-6x an hour. Also I strongly warn not to go with a check valve, because over time algae and dirt builds up on the flapper and can prevent a solid seal and leak back. So if your relying on a check valve to prevent back flow it will fail at some point.
And I also have to warn against the use of ball valves putting to much pressure back on the pump, this will heat your pump up and burn it out prematurely leaving you to replace it more often, I am not saying you can't use them but have a way of diverting pressure else where like back into the sump so that the pump doesn't work hard against the restriction.

You need to use some fine filter floss to remove the fine particles, this is part of the mechanical filtration. It will clear up in no time just remember to change it often.

Thats exactly what I was going to do actually lol. I was planning on have my return line go to a t joint, and have a check valve on both pipes exiting the t, one going back to the tank and the other back to the sump. With 2 valves on both lines I should be able to control the flow perfectly!

What do u think?
