Sump pumps

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The mags are quiet, The 18 is a little louder, but they are reliable. The output on the mag 18 is 1" I'm not sure about the quiet one.The top of your tank is pretty low. 1200 gph is a fantatic flow rate. what is the design of the sump/refuge/wet dry?

what is the max flow rate into the sump?
this is just as important. If your max flow rate in is 800, you cant get better than that out. what is size of tubing into the sump? bulkhead diameter?

stop valves? / check valves?

http://www.flexpvc.com/WaterFlowBasedOnPipeSize.shtml

this chart shows gravity feed flow rate through pvc by diameter. As well as pumped through

Was going to do the DIY overflow. Was waiting to decide on a pump before I built it so I knew the GPH and could build acordingly. Think I am going to do the three door plastic sterlite and a bigger rubber maid for the sump. If I get spending to much the wife will kill me.

Also look at the amount of Head the Pump can push... My 225 is 5' tall... cant get a cheapo pump that will do the work but only at 0'. Im looking at pumps that can do about 1000gph and thats still not what the pump should be sized by but u will need to get a Needle Valve to Throttle the Pump back if needed with the Flow rate to the sump.

If you flow to the sump is 200gph then and u get a 1000gph pump that will pump 500gph at 5' of head then u will need to adjust the Valve to reduce the flow back to the tank so that u do not run the sump dry and burn up the pump.

Best advice i can give is Oversize the pump and Buy a "ThrottlingValve" to throttle the flow back to match the flow coming into the sump. Use alot of towels or if u can find one a Drip pan.

Go with the quiet ones. I have had both. The Quiet Ones are not loud at all. You can definitely hear a buzz on the Mag 18. With the Quiet Ones, just don't buy one bigger than the 6000 series.

Any one used these, Tamm Rio 17HF, http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+4587+20170&pcatid=20170

Claiming 1090 GPH at 1' and only $55. Thanks again for all the awnsers it helped a ton.

Ok so with these ill have to get a 26HF to clear 5' for 225x5=1125gph

The 26HF will do 1140Gph @ 6' of head... (Aprrox. 1245 at 5')

Now thats 1' more than ill be up and its over the given 5x more than tank size GPH Requirements...

The 17HF does 660gph at 6' but again i only need 5'... (aprrox 825 @ 5')

With this said the 17HF wouldn't clear the 1125gph as the 1' of head only does 1090gph...

So move i must move up to the 26HF to make the 5x the tank size Requirements.

I hope i have my math just about right... this means a 75 dollar pump for me!

I didnt read the rest of the entires, sorry if this was already stated. Yes flow rate is important but normal 1 1/4 overflows can only handle 600 gph (correct if i am wrong)

1" overflows will make out at 600gph.

I second the vote for the Quiet ones. I use 2 Quiet One 4000's on each of my 125g tanks, and they are nice and quiet, and have good flow rates at 4-6' of head. With 2 pumping at about 5.5', I'm getting about 1,500gph in my 125g tanks.

One 4000 will do 750gph at 6' of head.

I was planning on using 1/2" or 3/4" overflow to sump on my 225? This too small for a siphon rate for this big of a tank?

And the "Queit ones" a Brand name? And can i get a link?
