Hello. I’m finally getting around to setting up my 72x24x36, ~260 tank. I had planned on using a 40 breeder as a sump. Do you think that’s big enough? I’m going to be dripping water into it too. I have the 40 breeder. Do you think it’s worth dropping $100 on a 55 gallon? Any other ideas?

I'm using a 60G breeder (48"x24"x12") for biological for my 245G and I'm happy with it, but I also use the bottom 2/3 of a 35G plastic drum for my particulate filtration.

For a 260, pony up for at least a 75. I have a 55 for the sump on my 220 and really wish I would have gone with a 75 or 90. 90 would be best for you in my opinion.
^ this is stellar advice. Hindsight is something to avoid with a sump if possible. If you can swing it go larger right out of the gate

I'm all about it but my challenge is the width of the stand. It's just at 18" and with the frame of a 40 breeder, 75, etc I can't fit it.

OP, if I were you, I would keep an eye on Craigslist for a used 75, 90 or 120. The 120 will be 2ft wide by 4ft long, so if you’re tank will only be 2ft wide, then you’ll want to avoid this one. Is your tank 2 or 3ft wide?

Anyway, definitely don’t go with a 40 breeder, you will regret it greatly. Like I said, I have a 55 on my 220 and regret that I didn’t get at least a 75. I would have still preferred to have gone with a 90 for my 220.

In your case, I think 75 should be the minimum. However, 90 will be much better, and better still would be a 120, if it will fit.

My challenge is the width. I barely have 18"
