Sump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I talked to Mike about making a stand. He said we'd need a router and all sorts of fancy stuff to basically make a beefy cabinet. lol. He's so cute when he's trying to show off... Did you have any fancy equipment or just a screwdriver?

like i said it all depends what you want to do. i had a skill saw, mider saw, hammer, tape measure, and a screw gun. routers are for more indepth edging, inset pannels, and doors that i can do. like i said i can make it for exactly what you need and then mike doesnt have to come up with misc excuses. he has a nice looking bike you can have a nice looking thing of your own.

You two are making this much harder than it needs to be! :D

Stands & sumps are very simple even for non-handy people like myself. You can do a simple stand out of 2x4's & just sheath it in some wall panels like these; you'll end up with a sturdy stand that will hold up well & will last while also looking very good. The whole project wouldn't take you too long to do either; you could easily get it built in a couple of hours, if that, and then do the stain/paint. As for the sump, I would get either that 40 breeder that's already ready to go or just do a baffle-less sump using some other aquarium (preferably the 55 gallon). Just remember that it's all fun & games until the power goes out and your sump overflows due to a lack of space for the extra water, so don't fill the sump up all the way & plan accordingly!

Dude, go check out Uaru Joey's YouTube videos. He's all about DYI and his designs are simple to follow. Some may think that his designs are for noobs, but they are very simple by design, and encourages you to experiment with different combinations of things that'll allow you to create your own fish husbandry skills and techniques. Filtration is very important, but you shouldn't make your system so complicated that it becomes difficult for you to maintain. Your filtration can grow as you grow. Aloha! :)

i love to be difficult it is one of the things i do best. i know her and she would want it to be more then a slap together thing. the stand i have my 125gal on only took me a few hours to put together. took me longer to clear coat it then anything else. basically the stand i am talking about will look like this but instead of a window it would just be solid accross and you wouldnt see the tank below. unless she wanted to see the sump to have crabs or whatever in it then window could be there. looks nice wide enough for all filtration. spreads out the weight a bit more. and it is pleasing to the eye.

basically it is complicated because she doesnt know exactly what she wants and asks seven diff people what to do the does what the first one says. seen it all play out before. then there is the time i told her then her boyfriend told her she needed ball joints on her car. she ended up on a flatbed fir a lack of action.

Hey now...The ball joints aren't even fair...Not much I can do if the mechanic won't listen... and is a complete tighta--... Except find a new one and screw myself over on free repairs and oil changes. He operates like Dan a lot of the time but at least its fixed once it breaks. lol And there's nothing wrong with asking for several opinions and choosing the suggestions that best fit my needs, sir. :)

Thanks for the advice, Wiggles. I'm thinking I'll go with the 40 breeder if its still there and go from there. Like Scott pointed out, I doubt the floor can hold much more than that. She's no spring chicken, lol. If not, petco still has their dollar/gal sale going on... And everything I've read has emphasized testing the power outage to see how much it fills up so you can plan accordingly.

fairladyz - Thanks for the nudge. I'll for sure check out those vids. I like sweet and simple (no matter what Scott says, lol). And cheap. We're a fan of cheap.

Best way to test power outages is to fill the sump to the top then fill the tank to just under the over flow and then turn the pump on. Mark the level of the sump with tape and never fill it above that line

water on the floor sucks. had some overflow malfunctions in the past and water gets into everything.

kelly if you liked things simple you would have this setup already. you gave sound advise from several people yet i still see that damn tank in my kitchen...lol friday it is then.
