Sun catfish needs help badly

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok I have an old pill bottle with 10 amoxicillin with each tablet being 875 MG.
If it is any help, the bottle was filled 04/30/2013
Can these be of any help? If so I'll move him to me 20 gallon quarantine and move the inhabitants somewhere else. I'm 99.9% sure they are good to go and I'm 99.9% sure my sun cat will die if I don't do anything.

I found two papers saying that amoxicillin is effective against Columnaris but it's related to erythromycin and really better for Gram positive infections. Columnaris and most fish infections are Gram negative. Is the fish still eating? I've only found references to amoxicillin being put in food or injected, not as a bath. Some drugs only work when administered a certain way.

I believe he's still eating. I'll go feed everyone now.

Making medicated food isn't always easy and it's not the first choice of antibiotic for this.

The best thing would be to find an aquatic vet and get injectable antibiotics. I've had that done before and it wasn't too expensive. The question is whether you have an aquatic vet near you. There are more and more everyday but still large areas without them.

I have no doubt that there is not an aquatic vet around me :(. What would I even type into Google to search if there was one around me? "Aquatic vet around _____"?
Also thank you to everyone for helping me

That old script for amoxicillin is expired. It loses its half life after it expires and effectivety after that. Wouldn’t use it.

Would move it to a qt tank with super clean water. Add some salt at a 1tsp per gallon. Can dab the area with some methylene blue or use as a dip and bathe the fish in MB (15-20min) as directed.

As far as if it’s columnaris is hard to say due to the trauma. Lack of cultures etc. Columnaris will kill fast though. Meds preferred would be kanamycin and Furan.

Is it acting normal? Is it eating? Hard to tell in the small container.

There's a search engine but it's not 100% accurate:

Another option is to ask exotic vets if they know anyone who sees fish.

Do you have public aquariums or zoos with fish nearby? These are often the same vets who look after their fish.

The nearest thing like that is the georgia aquarium I believe. Or seaworld.
Ok so I should move him to my quarantine tank? I'll start preparing it now.
And I know the answer is yes but aquarium salt correct? If so I'll get it tomorrow. I have literally never had a fish get sick on me before now except for a ram with ich that died before I could even get medicine so I have literally nothing to treat a sick fish :/.
Also I moved him to the small kritter keeper so I could get a pic of his injuries. And yes he is acting normal. Was hiding like normal and is now schooling with the 3 other sun cats in the tank now that I have removed their hiding places.

Drugs in dry form don't really degrade. There are many studies where decades old drugs have been tested and found to be still viable. Expiration dates are arbitrary.

Expiration dates have been extended many times during drug shortages.

Yeah, prepare the QT tank. Twenty gallons was it?

I've read that Kosher salt can be substituted for aquarium salt. Salinity can't be changed rapidly so the salt should be added gradually. And once the fish had adjusted to 1% salt, water changes or returning him to the main tank would have to be done slowly as well. Unless, of course, the replacement water for a change was dosed to 1% in advance.

Did you check out the vet search engine? There are a few in Georgia.

Yep 20 gallon high.
I am looking for kosher salt now.
I have not yet, I have been getting prepared to move the inhabitants out of the quarantine tank.

Ok I have found a box of kosher salt. Not much but it makes a handful to a palm full. Closer to a pam then a hand
