Sunnies

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I just had to move and my Sunfish is now not eating, he really doesn't like his surroundings (tank placement) but I have no other options. My Creek Chub is having no issue eating though. Hopefully he will be ok, we have 2 wks till our new place is available, just where we r temporarily.... :(

It took my natives a few days to eat, I've got pumpkinseeds, a white and yellow perch and a pickerel, in various tanks. I tried pellets and such, they tasted then spit them back out, so I went back to where i caught them and I caught some small grass shrimp. They tore those up, it was a frenzy. Anything with movement will drive these fish nuts. I also got red wigglers and mealworms from petsmart and they destroyed those as well. about two weeks later I caught some small minnows with a little minnow trap at the river as well and they hit those too. I've tried pellets again, but with no movement, they're just disinterested.

I plan on raising feeders, rosy reds and guppies, then catching a TON of grass shrimp and keeping them/breeding them in a small tank through the winter to keep a solid live food supply.

One thing is for sure, I've kept all kinds of cichlids and other fish over the years and nothing comes close to being as interesting as these natives are. I'm on the Chesapeake Bay, so my natives come from there. I'm already planning a massive tank with rockfish, more pumpkinseeds/sunfish, perch and maybe even some flounder. A solid oyster shell/live oyster reef in a corner, and some maryland blue crabs, now thats a tank, if I say so myself!

Hey guys got a few sunnies from the lake is it normal for them to be tired out and just laying against the sand, figured there stressed out from the catch or can something else be wrong?

Since we moved to our temporary digs, my Sunfish has also not been eating and a little spooked.

I have found he does not like flourescent lighting.

He will eat when 90% of the light is out, but nowhere near as comfortable as he was...

My Creek Chub is acting in a somewhat similar fasion but nowwhere near as bad as the Sunfish.

They have eaten but I think they are dieting..

Like Ship of Fools said sometimes it takes them a few days to acclimate to changes.
