Super green texas or naw?

i feel like my fish is so cool that's he's gotta be this certain something that sets him apart from all the others.

He IS cool, and he IS a certain something. He's a Carpintis. Carpintis are VERY cool fish, one of my favorites. I've had trouble keeping them, I'd like to have a tank to just raise Carpintis. They look great when they're tiny, they look even better when they're adults like yours. they have character.

They turn black and white when they're breeding. I think they top out at 10 inches. They can be pretty nasty in a community tank, too.

Yours will probably grow more--how old is he? At his age, his size, water changes are even more important than ever before. He's bigger than you realize, he puts out more waste than you realize, and he's in a smaller tank than you realize. At LEAST weekly 80% water changes.

Thanks I appreciate that. Yeah he's in only a 75 gallon. He's about a year and a half maybe, maybe less, i do weekly changes (most of the time) he's been raised in that tank. Just himself no other tank mates. He's our bachelor guy

He's gonna get bigger. You should get him a bigger tank, and a couple ladies to choose from. Then grow out his fry in the 75. THEN you'd be elite.....and you could send me some fry, too.

I got my eye on this really nice female, from a local store. Shes super nice but i was thinking my tank was to small to house both. The thought has crossed my mind and i will let you know for sure if i start any sort of breeding project with this guy

75 will be a bit tight for a pair but could possibly work if you put hiding spots in that only the female can fit in and the male cant, or use the eggcrate divider trick. I'd probably just leave him as a bachelor though. As he's grown up alone in that tank he probably won't be keep on sharing.

types/names of carpintus are usually associated with their location of origen. The one in these pics is a location chairel, often one location is only a few miles from another, so elling one from the other is often impossible, especially when there is variation even within spawn.
the same male below

Just a thought
Herichthys carpintus are not from Texas
Herichthys carpintus is really not more green than cyannogurttatus (at least to me)
so as a nickname, (and that's basically what common names are, there's nothing technical about it)
its only reality is that it looks similar to Herichthys cyannoguttatus, and to me, this makes it a very poor choice for a common name.
It leads to misidentification, and worse hybridization.
Just look at all the confusion with th "red terrors" .
