Legal Arowana Species/Types in the United States

1. Silver (common)
2. Silver (Platinum) note: not a different species
3. Black (similar in looks wise but with black fins & other noted differences)
4. Blue "same as the above.
5. African (not really a Arowana)
6. B. Jardini (Australian Arowana or AKA: Pearl Arowana)
7. B. Leichardti "

Note: If you are interested in B. Jardini's & B. Leichardti's these are known to be the most aggressive type of Arowana. So if your looking for a Arowana to be kept together with other fish it is not a wise choice unless you're willing to take the risk...

All other Arowanas/ Asian Arowanas (Ex: Red, Chili Red, XB, RTG are all considered "Asian Arowanas" which are illegal)

in some case the African arowana and Arapaima might be consider arowana because they are in the same family Osteoglossidae, but Afro and Arapaima are in subfamily Heterotidinae and other arowana are in the subfamily Osteoglossinae!

illegal only here in the states but if you ask around like some people mentioned you will probably find one but the price would be starting around $3000 for a small one at least around here where I'm from. If you don't want to get it i say go with the Australian they can be a little aggressive from my experience but they are the nicest IMO. Black ones are nice also hard to come by though, there are the Africans too but not a big fan i had one and sold it.

I got a 15" Black in November. So beautiful! It is my first Aro, but I would highly recomend one. Better looking (IMO) then the silver, and they grow slower from what I have read. I do not have a 450 so that was a selling point for me. I payed$ 200. I may have over payed, but I did not care, I love the look of them so much

All Asian arowanas are illegal in the us due to CITES (convention for international trade of endangered species) while many countries signed this we are the only country that actually follows All cites rules. Even if you did find one (which I have seen them in private collections in the US) if usfws (united states fish and wildlife service) finds out or even thinks that you have one they will obtain a search warrant kick your door in and if you do have one they will confiscate it and all fish keeping equipment then you will be jailed haw to go to court face large fines and prison time they will also most likely destroy the fish not worth it in my opinion I have had the opportunity to buy them but never will I would love to own one but weighing the consequences over the benefits does it in for me be smart and stick with australian south American or Africans no matter what some one says about microchips paperwork or whatever you will not get a legal one... If you have to have one the only legal option is to move out of the country Canada is the closest place that you can legally get one although I'm sure that you could get one in Mexico
