Super Red Salvini - The Quest for the Holy Grail

@auratum that's what I was talking about inline breeding, will that work? Also since they pair, could you break the pair up and then have male/female pair to another fish?

Here is a pic of my Florida caught male salvini that I'm gonna use for breeding. I'm trying the same thing to get more red out in the fish. I've had a lot of people think this guy is female but he's not :). No way to trace back where these fish come from, and the color seems to depend on the fish. I've got two males and both ate differently colored. The other male is more blue and yellow with more red and orange in the fins.

Yes - that sure is a nice looking male! Did you get your replacement female yet? Would love to see pics when you do.

Really interesting thread!

P.afer looks like he's been line breeding these fish for enough generations (6+ years!) to really select for specific traits (it doesn't happen in a single spawn / generation...). The results are stunning!

It really goes to show that (with good starting stock, time, patience and dilligence) you can create supernatural versions of just about any cichlid out there - "better" than what's found in the wild (i.e. aesthetically pleasing to aquarists).

The question is: How do you judge that in a fish show?

Matt - not sure what criteria are used. To me it is not different than any line bred fish. Fancy guppy, fancy angelfish, fancy discus, fancy betta. It is not to that extreme, but if they are considered unnatural, then they would fall into a line bred category. To me - the male in his picture is not any more red than some pictures of other males with lots of red - like those referenced in my original post above.

Fish will be here in a few days. My supplier went fishing again and caught a few more and one of the males is loaded with red! So I'm gonna have her send me the red male along with the female with the most red. Ill just put my current male in my new world tank to grow up and live out his days without the hassle of a woman lol.
