Super Red Salvini - The Quest for the Holy Grail

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi Patrick,
I have been breeding salvini since I collecting them in 1992 from southern mexico lake. They had the darkest red and good belly coverage on females. Males were not so red but had good blue. After some time of breeding blue spangles came into the females and I started to loose some of the red in the belly. At that point I tried to use more yellow males so as to keep the red in the females. These fish are not Rio Chacamax, the red was lighter in color on the one wild one that I had, but had good red coverage.
Later I got F1's of the Nututun location (river) from and males had better red. I am breeding both lines together now and have babies. Need help getting pictures up.

P.afer,

Thanks for your response and information! To post pictures you need a picture website account like photobucket. You load your pictures there and then paste a link into your post. There are better directions on here somewhere, but this is the basic idea.

Regards,
Patrick

I'd love to see some pics. I use imageshack, sometimes I upload directly from my comp, when you press the picture button, you should have an option to load directly from your comp.

I have one more male that has less black in the belly but this is the dominate male breeding. Got two batches with different females.

This is an older female which you can see some blue in the belly. I was breeding bluer males with red females and then the females got some blue. I also got some super blue males but after 6 years or so I fed black worms and neglected water changes and the fish got hole in the head. I keep the fish but only have cured it once. I also have a 4 fish that are real yellow but again have a small amount of hole in head. The fish I got from the wild were even more red and these have a less pointy head.

Here's a pic of one of my growouts right now. She's not even close to dominant in a community cichlid tank, transitioning into getting my Festae out of here.

I have sals, and I was thinking in more of a dog breeding way. But will the female and male pair to another fish from the batch? Is that possible...I am new to having these guys.

Not sure if this worked, female should be my cross and male Nututun

P.afer - nice looking salvini's! That male from Nututun is awesome - this is like what I am looking for!

MandM614 - nice female, she is showing great color.

JCRUZ - not sure what your question is? Fish can pair up with siblings (brother mate with sister) and with parents (father with daughter and mother with son). Unless you are trying to line breed for a specific purpose, most people prefer to breed unrelated fish if possible.

Here is a pic of my Florida caught male salvini that I'm gonna use for breeding. I'm trying the same thing to get more red out in the fish. I've had a lot of people think this guy is female but he's not :). No way to trace back where these fish come from, and the color seems to depend on the fish. I've got two males and both ate differently colored. The other male is more blue and yellow with more red and orange in the fins.
