Super Red Salvini - The Quest for the Holy Grail

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I really like this thread.

Brb gonna buy some salvinis.

we got some of the salvini chacamaxes in at the LFS I work at - (in Canada!). we have six, they're juvenile, haven't come into their colors yet.

how aggressive are these guys? (I've never worked with them before, they are SUPER rare here)

can I add one or two of these to a community tank? The only other cichlids in the community tank are a pair of Kribensis, other stock includes juvenile bala sharks (5" - 6"), tiger barbs, zebra danios, and a juvenile red tailed shark. (he's pretty feisty though, even though he's not all grown up)

if I get a pair (a male and female) are they going to murder everything when breeding time comes? The kribs have spawned before and while the male defends aggressively, there's never been a problem. If only one, recommend a lone male or a female?

thanks in advance

edit: should note, heavily planted tank, lots of wood and rocks etc. EI dosing with medium/fairly strong light

These are the three c. salvini "chacamax" I brought home - would anybody be able to sex these for me with confidence? I haven't dealt with them before so I just had to guess. a) top one male? he's bigger, more vibrant and was the bully of the tank at work. b) if he's male are the other two female? smaller, currently less colour. Not sure if these fish are all the same age, but we've been assuming they are.

The three remaining at work are another one who is similar to the top one (but slightly smaller) and two more similar to the bottom two. Should I change the combination at all? The intent would be to eventually form a breeding pair when they mature and to continue the chacamax strain locally, these fish are extremely rare here.

thanks! I will post this again in a thread for visibility. need some help getting to know these fish :)

Top one is female...more colorful, orange in the belly, the spot on the operculum and black spot in the dorsal are all indicators. The other two look male.

ok thank you! other reply in the other thread seems to concur with your assessment. I will grab the other one at work that looks similar to the top one to get a 2nd female. They must be older I guess? afaik the males grow larger.

Yes, males grow larger. She might be older or she's growing faster since she's a bully and probably getting more food. The males will probably catch up. Good luck with them!

thanks! I'll grab the other female for sure one tomorrow when I'm at work, I may even grab the other two - we won't be getting these in again (possibly ever) so I *need* to create a pair.

they all co-habitate fine right now - do you know any approximation of when their aggression will ramp up and I'll need to split them up?

and thanks again for the info
