Super Red Texas grow out thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wasn't planning another update post so soon, but noticed something unexpected. SRT #6, the smaller fish I moved into the 40 long with white sand...is reverting back to dark colouring. It's only been a week and a half since I split them up and this fish moved to this tank. He's definitely getting more comfortable and outgoing, but within the last few days I realized he was darker than before.

IMO impossible to determine how RT's will turn out, unless they are already fully faded when you buy them. But of course true SRT that are actually red, and fully faded, are priced accordingly.

No, naturally...but this guy WAS almost totally faded. I was expecting that he may never fade entirely and keep the little bit of non-faded marking he had when he arrived, but I totally didn't think they could reverse and fade back. That's specifically why I paid for and bought juvies that had already partially faded - figured at the very least I knew they had started to fade so would at least remain as they were, not end up with SRT that just looked like regular texas.

I understand. Unfortunately most of the fish marketed online by Thai breeders/exporters, are in reality RT's. Nothing overly super about them, but it sounds good from a marketing perspective. I recall years back seeing a pair of SRT's in a shop south of me, well known for bringing in specialty fish, plenty of wild caught specimens, etc. After 2-3 weeks of being in country those SRT's turned into POS. I never would have known they were the same fish. The owner snuffed both of them, and never bought fish from that Thai exporter again.

Not saying yours were juiced, but who really knows what takes place in a breeders tank in Bangkok? What I do know is the most of the true Super RT's, never leave Asia, and the ones that do cost a small fortune. The fish that I posted above was one of mine from years back, given to me as a gift from an Aro importer in Van. Not super, but a decent RT, and still the largest male specimen that I have even seen. Approx 11-12" when that pic was taken.

I hope that yours all turn out for you. Good luck!

I'm not too worried about the SRT/RT situation...I went into it knowing how high the price tag goes for nice ones, so that's not what I'm expecting out of these by any means...just hoping for at least one nice golden orange spangled RT out of the group. I don't even mind if they don't fade all the way - I think the "piebald" look of the partially faded ones that still have dark patches look pretty cool actually. Just have to wait and see on these guys and hope they do something decent. I never had any issues with the hundreds of koi bettas I've imported from overseas, always exactly what I paid for and super high quality...guess I just got too used to that lol.

Why is the option of pre-sale treatment of fish with androgenic steroid hormones not being considered? The action of the hormone has ended, and therefore instability in color appears. Over time, the natural hormonal background will return to normal and the fish will show their genetic potential.

Who said it's not being considered? It's entirely possible. But I'll never know for sure, so my only course of action is to continue to let them grow out and see what they do.

Ten years ago I had the opportunity to buy this SRT. I saw him at a pet store in Bangkok. There were no obstacles related to the purchase and export of fish from Thailand. The only thing that stopped me was my lack of experience in the long-term transportation of large adult aggressive fish.

Stunning specimen, maybe. This is pretty much what the two juiced SRT's in a local shop that I mentioned above looked like, up until the juice wore off. They never returned to anything special, far from it.

Well we will all have to stay tuned to see what this little group of 6 do lol.
